The Akoma Newark Sister Circle in collaboration with Center Stage Cuts will host  “Djembe: An Interactive Conversation on Wellness for Men of Color".

 

The intent for this  event is to initiate discourse around the following topics:

1) The recent  shootings within the Newark community and

2) the rise in suicide rates among men in urban areas.

 

Throughout the duration of this event a collection of brand new toiletries from guests will be donated to a local men’s shelter in  Newark.

Middle of Nowhere Film Screening

The Akoma Newark Sisters Circle in collaboration with The Africana Institute at Essex County College host a film screening in celebration of Black History Month in Newark.

 

The event is a special screening of, “Middle of Nowhere” by Female African American Director,Ava DuVernay.

 

The intent for this film is to spark dialogue regarding the images of People from the Diaspora in the film and media industry, the struggles of being an African American filmmaker and open discussion on the prison system in conjunction with the global black family.

 

This event was produced by Haitian American Artist, Sophia Domeville.

"The Akoma Newark Sister Circle - It all began with an Idea!"

It was a full house for the Akoma Newark Sister Circle and the Africana Institute of Essex County College for a special screening of Sundance Best Director winner, Ava Duvernay's Middle Of Nowhere. Sophia Domeville and Tracee Thomas share their excitement about the success of the event, and are poised to produce more of the same!

Mental illness.

 

It's something we don't talk about much but can no longer afford to ignore.

 

This was the thinking of Sophia Domeville, Hatian-american artist and member of the Akoma Newark Sister Circle. Sophia and the Akoma Newark Sister Circle are hosting an event called Djembe, a film screening and discussion about mental illness and wellness for men of color. I sat with Sophia and asked her some questions about the event...
